On June 9th, we hosted Pitch by the Fire — a night filled with s’mores, startup stories, awesome pitches, and the chance to win a prize bag courtesy of Startup Waterloo.

We kicked off the event with a crazy startup story from Robert Bruski, co-founder of Ctrl V. After warming up the crowd, numerous entrepreneurs stood up to pitch their ideas.

Each person was given a sparkler at the beginning of the night and when their sparkler was lit, they had to pitch their idea before it burned out. At the end of the night, each person gave their burnt-out sparkler to the entrepreneur who they thought gave the best pitch.

Some of the crazy pitches we heard ranged from toaster-sharing services to a license plate tracker that tracks your time at a parking spot, and even a story involving a close encounter with Jack Black during someone’s startup journey!

We heard a lot of great pitches, and the best one came down to a two-way tie between Shawn Michael and Alex Tobias for the prize. Being the courteous people they were, the duo decided to split the prize and take it home together.
